The car definitely needs new tips. They make everything else look cheap.

The UK models get big ones for some reason.

I dig it... That car isn't about power, it's about fun. Granted, I'd love to get one and throw a 3.0 liter Hartley H1V8 in it, which would give it about 400 hp, 250 ft. lbs., but that would be expensive... so it's not happening anytime soon, short of me hitting the lottery or something.

You could always turbocharge it. I am sticking the NA route, and getting some power like that. Seems like more fun, and more money to waste.

USA says that a car cannot have exhaust that sticks out past the bumper or something like that. In the end us americans get the ugly tips.

I was thinking, if I do get one, about upgrading internal parts, like lighter valves, pistons, better cams, maybe have the cylinders bored out a bit, and having the ECU tuned... I'm wondering how much work, and how worth it it would be to try to get more power out of the engine without Turbocharging or Supercharging it... My whole idea would be to have it look like nothing was done to it when you look under the hood, aside from maybe intake and exhaust.

Too expensive for their own good, best just to buy an exhaust system.

It will be expensive, my exhaust alone will cost 1K, and then if I add headers and a tune another 1.5K!!!! Luckily I am not doing to much besides that. Wheels, radiator, oil cooler for another 2K, and then suspension and brakes if necessary, don't know how much those are.

Well, the question for me is: What is the power to dollar ratio?

If it ended up costing $35-40k (Including the car) after all of the various possible upgrades, and I ended up getting 350-400 hp out of it, it might just be worthwhile... But if I'd only get say 250-300 hp, I don't think it would be... I could get that much power cheaper and easier by Turbocharging it.

Well your best bet is a turbo/supercharger then. For 7K you can get a supercharger kit that makes 300hp. For roughly the same money in NA form you will probably get 250 or so.

I was hoping to avoid turbo noise... Cops in my area have been known to go after cars that make that noise for no reason other than the car has been turbocharged. I heard a story about someone having to get their car re-inspected, as the police were trying to catch him for having racing parts in his engine.

True. Personally I'd just get cheaper tips off eBay and leave the stock exhaust — I've gotten over my wake-up-the-neighbors-and-their-dead-ancestors phase.

I don't think I have. Although, I don't want my car to be obnoxious, mostly because I want to hear in 2 years time.

The superchargers aren't too loud. So if you do buy the car that is the best route. People seem to like them the best.

Maybe I'll contact Crawford Performance and run my idea by them, since I've heard they've got a lot of experience with boxer engines... Maybe they can give me a rough idea of what I could do internally to the engine, how much power it'll get me, and how much the parts would cost... I'm good at turning wrenches, so I don't think I'd have a problem doing a lot of the work myself. About the only things I can think of that I wouldn't be able to do myself are increasing the cylinder bore, and tuning the ECU...

I think induction noise is actually more interesting, especially with a 4cyl NA engine. Surprised you haven't looked into that more.

I have been looking at intakes, and I think I know what I am going for an aFe Takeda. I have heard good things. Although, I am too hung up about the exhaust. Maybe because it will make cool sounds.

Not yet, but hopefully soon. Probably going to be around 400 so I only lost $100(I got it at a discount price woot woot!). I just need to get a box to fit it in, and it will be gone!
